PRODUCT INFORMATION

General Description

Lovely to see highly selected Very Good to A grade polished celestite back in stock! Polished celestite is substantially harder to obtain than one might imagine! Free forms being the most frequently seen on the market. Eggs, spheres and hearts are substantially less common. Celestine or Celestite is a mineral consisting of Strontium Sulfate. The mineral is named for its delicate blue colour. Celestine and the carbonate mineral Strontianite are the principal sources of the element strontium, commonly used in fireworks and in various metal alloys. Madagascar yields some amazing specimens of this mineral which has a range of blue to blue grey colours. The acicular crystal habit is particularly rare. We select only the absolute best specimens which are graded based on shape, clarity and colour of crystals and levels of intactness. A fairly small amount of material ends up being polished into various shapes. Celestite was named for its pale sky-blue colour (from the Latin term caelestis) by Abraham Werner in 1798. Oral history suggests that the Sakoany deposit of Madagascar were first discovered by a cattle herder who found some crystals that had weathered out close to the shore of the bay. Other deposits are known from various states in the USA, Poland, Germany, Mexico and exceptionally rare acicular specimens have been found from Congo. Price is grade dependent. Items are as shown.
