PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Aegirine with Schorl & Smokey Quartz from the Zomba Plateau, Malawi

Aegirine, part of the Pyroxene group, is a sodium iron silicate that typically forms long, prismatic crystals, often capped by steep asymmetrical pyramids. It can also appear as compact or fibrous grains. Specimens from Malawi vary greatly in thickness and size, from needle-like to massive crystals, and range in color from shiny black to fibrous green.

The Zomba Plateau in Malawi is a treasure trove of mineral diversity, particularly known for complex acicular clusters of Aegirine associated with Smokey Quartz, Orthoclase, Zircon, and Feldspar. Smokey Quartz from this region spans from dark gemmy varieties to morion and pitch-black forms, often containing Aegirine inclusions. Though less common, inclusions of Riebeckite, Rutile, and Green Chlorite phantoms have also been found, adding to the uniqueness of these specimens.

Zomba specimens, while not always conventionally beautiful, are highly complex and fascinating due to their formation processes. Many of these minerals exhibit self-healing characteristics, making them prized by both novice and experienced collectors alike. The Zomba Plateau remains a favorite locality, offering an incredible range of minerals with intricate and captivating structures.
