Hand made African bust sculpture - signed by artist - Solomon "Solly" Madzore
Solomon "Solly" Madzore, born in 1962 in the Guruve district of Zimbabwe, is a second-generation Shona sculptor who began his artistic journey in the early 1980s, learning from older artists in his community. Hailing from a region renowned for its rich serpentine stone deposits, he developed a style that often focuses on human forms, particularly heads and faces, with an emphasis on texture and contrast. Madzore frequently combines different stones, such as dark serpentine with lighter materials like marble or opalite, to create visual interest in his work. His sculptures have gained international recognition, having been exhibited in galleries across Europe, the United States, and South Africa. As a mid-tier artist within the Shona sculpture movement, he is known for producing high-quality, collectible pieces that reflect the cultural and spiritual themes central to Shona art.
This striking, hand-crafted African bust sculpture showcases exquisite artistry and craftsmanship. Carved from a unique combination of minerals, the piece embodies a harmonious fusion of Southern African minerals, each adding its own character to the work. The sculptor has skillfully used a diamond tool to shape the figure, bringing out intricate details and creating a sense of depth and expression.
