PRODUCT INFORMATION

General Description

If only the Vikings had Iolite with Pink Feldspar spots, they could have navigated with rose-tinted Iolite glasses!

Historically, Iolite was revered as the "Viking’s Compass," used by Norse sailors to shield their eyes from the sun and aid in navigation. Its rare appearance, rich history, and natural beauty make Iolite a prized gem for collectors worldwide.

Discover the rare and extraordinary Malagasy Iolite, adorned with striking Pink Feldspar spots scattered throughout the stone. This remarkable material surfaced only once, making it a truly exclusive collector’s item. Feldspar, a natural companion to Iolite, enhances the uniqueness of each piece.

Skillfully polished by expert lapidaries in Madagascar, we only received one consignment of these beauties. Iolite’s deep blue hue, which can appear nearly black in low light, adds an air of mystery, while the vibrant Pink Feldspar spots offer a stunning visual contrast.

Iolite typically forms in metamorphic rock formations, where intense heat and pressure cause existing rocks like shale or schist to undergo changes in texture and mineral composition. During this process, Iolite can develop from minerals like mica and feldspar.

The gemmy blue variety of Iolite, named after the Greek word for violet, is the most desirable type. Its unique pleochroism, where colors shift depending on the angle, earned it the nickname "Dichroite," meaning "two-colored rock."
