PRODUCT INFORMATION

General Description

Quartz is perhaps one of the most common but also the most diverse, in terms of colour as well as associated inclusions. Three processes have been suggested to explain how inclusions “get inside” the quartz. These processes include protogenetic, syngenetic, or exsolution. Protogenetic inclusions occur when the inclusions have formed before the quartz and the quartz then engulfs and preserves them. Syngenetic inclusions occur when both the quartz and the inclusions grow simultaneously. Exsolution occurs when the conditions during crystal growth allowed the incorporation of elements into the crystal lattice that are incompatible with the crystal structure at different temperatures or pressures. Therefore, elements may then separate from the lattice to form new minerals once the conditions change.

Iron oxides and hydroxides are common inclusions and coatings. Several potential species fall with in this broad group such as magnetite, hematite, limonite, goethite and/or lepidocrocite. Amphibole & Chlorite group member inclusions are less common. Example of which would include actinolite and clinochlore / vermicular Chlorite, respectively. Other substantially less frequent inclusions are Anatase, Rutile (Silver or Gold), Tourmaline Group, Epidote, Garnet, Fluorite, Calcite, Brookite, Pyrite, Dumortierite, Ajoite, Papagoite, Hollandite and many others.
