Malagasy Iolite / Water Sapphire: The Viking's Compass
Iolite, also known as Water Sapphire or Cordierite, is a rare non-gemmy variety found in large bodies and beautifully polished by world-class lapidaries in Madagascar. Exceptionally scarce, only a few kilograms of this stunning material surface infrequently. It is highly prized for its deep blue color, which can appear almost black in dim light. Recent discoveries from the Northern Cape reveal vibrant blue streaks, adding an allure reminiscent of labradorite.
Cordierite spans a range of captivating colors, including grey, blue, blue-violet, greenish, yellowish-brown, and colorless, with light blue hues under transmitted light. The most desirable form is the gemmy blue variety, often called Iolite, derived from the Greek word for violet. Its strong pleochroism displaying different colors depending on the angle, earned it the name "Dichroite," or "two-colored rock."
Historically, Iolite was famed as the "Viking's Compass," used by Norse sailors to shield their eyes from the sun's glare while navigating open seas. Its rare beauty and fascinating past make Iolite a cherished find for collectors worldwide.
