General Description

Stichtite is a rare mineral known for its purple color, which comes from Chromium Magnesium, giving it a silky soft pearly luster. It belongs to the Hydrotalcite mineral group and is only found in a few locations worldwide, including Dundas in Tasmania and Kaap Se Hoek and Barberton in South Africa. This material is often found in association with black or brown Serpentine, but recent deposits have yielded material with semi-gemmy green Serpentine. The Stichtite is cobbed into small, colorful pieces that are very sellable. It's light in weight, making polished items have a beneficial size to weight ratio. However, due to its composition and softness, achieving a perfect polish is nearly impossible, and natural flaws, fissures, or cracks may be evident. Stichtite is formed as an alteration product of Chromite-containing Serpentine. Toprock sources the rough directly from the mines in Barberton, South Africa, and exclusively polishes the material in their factory. Larger pieces of Stichtite are rare and collectible since the deposit mostly yields small rough pieces. While there may be plans to attempt creating larger items like eggs and balls, it would result in a significant waste of material and negatively impact the price. Stichtite is highly sought after in the international market and is a valuable resource locally, especially since it's otherwise mostly known from large deposits in Australia.
