LAPIS LAZULI
Lapis lazuli, often simply called lapis, is a deep-blue metamorphic rock prized since antiquity for its intense color. Unlike most gem materials, lapis is not a single mineral; it’s composed primarily of lazurite, a blue silicate mineral from the sodalite group, typically making up 30-40% of the rock. In addition to lazurite, lapis lazuli usually contains calcite and pyrite, contributing to its striking appearance.
Originating from the Persian word for the gem, lāžward, lapis lazuli is one of the few mineral types we offer that is not sourced from Africa or Madagascar. This captivating stone is celebrated for its rich history and stunning hue, making it a fantastic choice for collectors and enthusiasts alike.
