PRODUCT INFORMATION
General Description
Howlite was discovered in Nova Scotia 1868 by Henry How (1828–1879), a Canadian chemist, geologist, and mineralogist. Henry dubbed it Silico-Boro-Calcite; it was given the name Howlite by James Dwight Dana shortly thereafter. Nowadays its most common use is the production of synthetic turquoise aka “turquenite”. Howlite is commonly powder coated and dyed into a wide range of colours. Toprock Howlite is sourced from Zimbabwe and is 100% natural. Logistically its near impossible to get any large amount of rough material at a reasonable price per kg. Howlite has a white to grey host colour with distinctive vein like patterns. The greater the contrast in colour between the matrix and veins the higher the quality. The whiter the better and the darker the veins the more exceptional. Price is grade dependent.
